The Checklist Manifesto
I’m reading The Checklist Manifesto and recommend it for all in the medical field. It’s written by a general surgeon but covers many professions and specialties inside and outside the medical field. Also—gratifyingly—it portrays nurses in a very positive light and credits them with some of the first uses of checklists. Just goes to show…the world needs us!

Bah. As a nurse educator it is more important to understand the concepts of WHY things are included in a check list. Merely having the list (algorithm) reduces the nurse to a gopher status and stints professional and academic growth. These tools should never replace talent.
I’ve also read “The Checklist Manifesto” by Atul Gawande. I thought it was great, but his other two books, “Better” and “Complications” were wonderful. If you haven’t read them yet, I would highly suggest picking up a copy.
