Like many folks, I bought a bunch of software from Skyscape and was pleased as punch at not having to carry around bulky books. I had to reset my device, which changed my device ID, and I e-mailed their customer support to get new codes. Well, since my subscriptions expired, I have to PAY again to get the software. This is crap. If I had bought a paper drug reference manual, I’d still be able to look at it even though I wouldn’t have the latest and greatest updates. Similarly, my Mosby’s Reference Manual still has a ton of useful stuff in it, yet Skyscape won’t let me have the OLD versions that I bought! Why is this not illegal?
I’m so done with them. Watch out if you’re considering using their medical software: you have to pay repeatedly for the same book even if you’d be perfectly happy with a slightly outdated version. It’s highway robbery. Go with Epocrates. Grrrr.
In the electronic world things are different. There are costs associated with it and you cannot compare it with owning a book, where you get no updates, etc.. As far as ePocrates, wait till you start using it and you will be get a ruder shock. If you don’t sync for a certain period your software plain stops working. Go figure. It is free, so you get what you pay for. I know all this seems unfair, but welcome to the electronic world !!
Oh this is NOT what I wanted to hear. I had a Palm 515 in school and after I graduated I put some Skyscape stuff on it. It was a pain to carry, so I just stopped using it. Then they invented smartphones. Voila! Nursing in my pocket yet again! I didn’t have any trouble moving the programs onto the new Treo 650, although it did involve a bit of back & forth with Skyscape.
I’ve since spent oodles on Skyscape stuff and want to upgrade to a Centro (so much smaller) but half my subscriptions have expired. I spent SO much money on them!
What a disappointment!
(Skyscape hasn’t actually gotten back to me yet…I’m going to give them heck if I can’t get new unlock codes for my new Device ID)
I’ve used Skyscape and felt the same way when I had to transfer to my treo. I was mad initially, but after talking to the customer support @ skyscape (who was very pleasant, btw), I have come to accept as a reality in the software world. We switched to Mac @ home and wanted to transfer photoshop that my son had on the pc. If you tried calling adobe to give you a free transfer from pc to mac, you will be enlightened! or how about calling microsoft to give you their latest version of software just because you changed the pc?

But it isn’t the same thing. I’m not asking for free updates forever. I’m asking for SAME DATABASE I already paid for. I don’t even need a new copy of it. There is no expense involved for Skyscape. At any rate, I spent several hundred dollars for software that I now have no access to (because they “changed their policy”). If I had purchased books, I would still be able to read them. There is no way around this basic problem. I just think people should be aware of this before they start loading their smart phones…that’s all.
I always downloaded whatever version of SkyScape software I had purchased and kept a copy of the codes and stuff in case anything happened. I don’t know why resetting your device changed the device ID because I have had to reset mine and the same ID stays. Sorry for your digital losses.
